July plein air at Kat's

Lovely day painting plein air at Kat Sowa's "Windy Creek" on the Nehalem River near Vernonia.  Lots of artists there, plenty of inspiring sights for future paintings, horses, barns, relaxing lunch on the patio...It was tempting to grab a kayak and float away but I stuck to my easel!

March

 Steigerwald Refuge, plein air 9" x 12"
 Steigerwald Refuge, plein air 8" x 8"
Gibbons Creek, 5" x 7"

It was the official first day of Spring and National Happiness Day, so I did what makes me happy:  plein air painting!  This was my first time at Steigerwald Nature Refuge on the Washington side of the Columbia Gorge, a wetland with a trail called the Gibbons Creek Wildlife Art Trail.  Perfect!  It was lovely, quiet except for the sounds of birds.  Huge flocks of geese floated overhead.  I finished two plein air paintings, then walked further up the trail to Gibbons Creek, almost to the edge of the Columbia River, took photos to paint from later.  The first painting included a view of Mt. Hood squeezed into the far right side, which did not look right back in the studio, so I wiped it out.  Aha!  Mt. Hood must be the star of the show, or not be there at all.

Early March

Powell Butte View of Mt. Hood, Spring plein air 9" x 12"

Powell Butte, View of Mt. Hood, Spring 5" x 7"

It felt like Spring, anyway there was some sun, so I went out to Powell Butte for plein air painting.  The view of Mt. Hood was inspiring, but it was so windy that I had to hold on to the easel with my left hand and both feet while painting!
Naturally, that meant I could not step back periodically to check the composition from a distance.  So I painted fast, packed up and went back to my warm studio!  The second, smaller painting has a tighter composition without the distraction of every branch and tree, and more texture which I think conveys the brisk atmosphere of the day.

Lavender Festival

"Lovely Lavender" 14" x 14" gallery wrapped canvas
 "The Old Wheelbarrow" 9" x 12"
Two plein air paintings in one day on my first day of the Lavender Festival!  The first was a broad view looking out beyond the lavender fields in full sun to a distant meadow framed by evergreen trees.  Then I switched to the shade of a tree where there was an old wooden wheelbarrow with picked lavender in front of flowers and a vine covered trellis.  There was also a lavender painted bicycle, chickens, dogs, kids and lots of people happily picking lavender and sipping lavender tea.

""Lavender and Rose Garden" 12" x 16" SOLD!
 "Lavender Fantasy" 14" x 14"
On my second paint out I visited Red Ridge Farms, which is like a European vacation with lavender fields, flower and herb gardens, a grove of olive trees, adjoining vineyards, elegant decor and a soothing fountain.
The location for my first plein air painting was on a narrow path near misting sprinklers, in full sun.  Maybe I was too uncomfortable to concentrate on the beauty of the scene, but that painting did not come out well. The next location was in the shade looking out past the lavender fields to the rose garden uphill.  There were poppies and all sorts of colorful and fragrant flowers and shrubs.  Later, I covered over the plein air painting that I did not like and created "Lavender Fantasy" from my imagination, adding a figure.

"Fragrant Garden" 14" x 14"
The last place I visited, Barn Owl Nursery, was also the most enjoyable.  Instead of sweeping vistas of fields, there was a charming quiet garden of lavender and herbs bordered by birch trees.  There is just something wonderfully soothing about the fragrance of lavender!  Next I must select 3 of these 5 to enter into the Oregon Lavender Paint Out, show and festival this weekend in Newberg, Oregon.  Come for art, music, fun!  www..wvlavenderfestival.org.

Smith Rock

This is a studio alla prima painting 6" x 12" "High Desert Golden Shades" from a photo at Smith Rock.
At the Smith Rock Paint Out, "Desert Shades" on my easel.  We had between 8 am and 1 pm to complete and present framed paintings.  All the views were beautiful and the weather perfect!

"Desert Shades" after studio work.  The rock perched against distant Cascade mountains is called "Snoopy"!
"Towers Meet Sky" 6" x 12", my second plein air painting on June 21, was selected by judges from the High Desert Art League to be included in the exhibit at Roberts Field, Redmond Municipal Airport, through August 20.  Central Oregon High Desert rocks!

Plein Air

A cool double waterfall on a sunny day at Crystal Springs, blooming rhododendrons, surrounded by ducks, geese, and lots of happy people even on a Tuesday, what's not to like? Plein air, 9" x 12", oil.

Fall Beach

Remember Fall? Just a few weeks ago I went for a walk at Sauvie Island on the beach of the Columbia River. It was sunny and serene, although hunting season. This is a small 8" x 8" study I started plein air and finished later. The photo was taken with incandescent light (since there was no daylight at all today) so the clouds look a bit dingy. Oh well, the winter solstice is past and the light will return!

Old House

There is something satisfying about painting an old house, for one thing you don't have to worry about straight lines, as the structure gracefully bows to the forces of time and gravity. This old house is a short walk from Latourelle Falls in the Columbia Gorge, a beautiful setting to contemplate man's place in nature. Everything eventually gets covered in moss and lichen and weeds, reverting to lush greeness. Latourelle House is painted in acrylic, plein air, 11" x 14".
