September Big Paint out

 Sauvie Island Dike, 11" x 14"

The first Thursday in September was the Alla Prima "Big Paint out", where we brought larger than usual canvases or supports.  Mine was 14" x 18" instead of the usual 11" x 14", but I had no trouble filling in the space and completing in a few hours.  (I intentionally left some of the orange toned background unfinished).  The morning started out gray, cold and windy, then partly cloudy for a moment, then boom, clear and sunny! It was also a big paint out in terms of attendance, over 30 artists on the dike on Sauvie Island, close enough to the dog kennel to hear the barking chorus.

Elk Rock Island

Reflections, Elk Rock Island, oil 10" x 10" $125

Another painting of Elk Rock Island Park in Milwaukie, this one from my photo.  The day was sunny with strong shadows, the water still and reflective, the mood serene.

Please contact me to purchase this painting at stephanie.cissna@comcast.net.

Day 11

"believe in love" oil 11"14" on stretched canvas $190

The model at Studio 30 at Cathedral Park was "bil", a musician, songwriter, poet.  His initials stand for "believe in love".
He sang and recited a poem for us as we painted, both were about compassion, unselfish love.

Day 9

Tim, oil on 12" x 12" panel

After the Alla Prima artist group breakfast meeting yesterday, a couple of us went to the nearby Multnomah Center to sketch.  Mostly we sketched each other, and other people in the Senior Center lounge.  I did a small pencil sketch of Tim Young, and back in my studio decided to try using it as a basis for a painting on a board that already had a bright yellow under painting.  Tim, with his long gray beard and pony tail, is a wonderful artist and colorful character, so I thought he deserves a colorful background!

Smith Rock

This is a studio alla prima painting 6" x 12" "High Desert Golden Shades" from a photo at Smith Rock.
At the Smith Rock Paint Out, "Desert Shades" on my easel.  We had between 8 am and 1 pm to complete and present framed paintings.  All the views were beautiful and the weather perfect!

"Desert Shades" after studio work.  The rock perched against distant Cascade mountains is called "Snoopy"!
"Towers Meet Sky" 6" x 12", my second plein air painting on June 21, was selected by judges from the High Desert Art League to be included in the exhibit at Roberts Field, Redmond Municipal Airport, through August 20.  Central Oregon High Desert rocks!

Gorge

Another painting of Latourelle Falls, painted alla prima.  The first was larger, 14" x 14", slower, painted in layers to achieve translucence.  This one is 10" x 10", painted all at once in thicker paint, to capture the force of the water rushing and dashing against the rocks.  In musical terms, the first was andante, the second con brio.
